„… If indeed the most ancient and valuabel historical witnesses we have are largely unreliable and useless, there is much more room for historical speculation. But under such circumstances, the best option would probably be to abstain from developing historical models of the origin of the NT Gospels because of complete lack of a firm historical framework“.
